How to meet your financial goals

They say that money can’t buy you love, and that’s probably true, but it can buy you a lot of important things such as food. Some people are naturally money savvy, whereas others seem to spend any spare cash as if it’s burning a hole in their pocket. So, if you are saving for a house, a holiday, or just a rainy day, here are some top tips on how to meet your financial goals.

Find your motivation

It can be hard to save money if you don’t have a specific thing in mind. The clearer you can make the picture of your money goal, the more likely you are to reach it, so once you have decided what it is you are saving up for, focus on that. For example, if you are saving for a house deposit, think about the type of house you would like, and how it will change your life. Making a vision board is a great way to build on this if you are a visual person, and you can even add a chart to it to track your progress.

Be realistic

Once you’ve decided what you are saving your money for, it’s time to work out how much you can realistically put towards this goal without making your life miserable. It’s good to make some sacrifices to reach your goals, but you don’t want to sacrifice everything as you will begin to resent your financial goals and feel less motivated. Perhaps you could cut down on takeouts, or set a smaller budget for days out – that way you are still enjoying things you love but balancing this with your goals, too.

Look at your outgoings

How many of us sign up to subscriptions on websites and never get around to canceling them? Although it’s often only a few dollars here and there, over a year, it can add up, so audit your accounts and see what you can get rid of. If you’ve not been missing the money, why not set it up to go directly into your savings account and add to your total? This is also an excellent time to look at any lines of credit you’ve got and see which have the highest interest rates. Are you paying your credit cards off in the most efficient way, or are you just chiseling away at the interest?

Hustle!

If you are determined to reach a particular goal, you may feel motivated to do some stuff on the side. For example, do you have any unwanted furniture, gadgets, or clothes in your house that you could sell online? This money can all go towards your goal as extra bonuses, and you’ll be decluttering your home, too. Perhaps you could take on a few more hours at work, or start a side hustle doing something you’re good at, such as tutoring. Keep focused on the goal and how to get there.

Check-in regularly your budgeting

Make sure you continuously check that your budget is working, as it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and not make any headway towards your goals. Be sure that you are leaving enough money to play with, but that you are setting some aside for emergencies, too. If something isn’t working in your budget, change it.

If you’ve planned well and are willing to work hard, you can reach your goal!
